A Soft Pillow for a Tired Heart

August 25, 2006

Do you have a favorite verse in the Bible? Romans 8:28 is a favorite of many believers. R.A. Torrey, Pastor of Moody Church in Chicago called Romans 8:28 " a soft pillow for a tired heart." "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose." Surely this is one of the greatest promises of God in Scripture. We live the Christian life by the Holy Spirit when we stand on the promises of God.

Romans 8:28 is a comprehensive promise - "And we know that all things . . . " This promise is a link in a golden Biblical chain of promises which covers all of life. The good, the bad, and the in between are "all" included in the sovereignty of God. Only God can take bad things and turn them for our good. Nothing can come to the child of God that does not first pass through the hand of God.

Romans 8:28 is a cooperative promise - ". . . work together . . ." No one event explains all of our life or all the providences of God. God makes all the events of our pilgrimage to cooperate one with the other for our good.

Romans 8:28 is a clear promise - ". . . for good. . ." God is good . . . all the time. Everything He ordains and permits will turn for the good of the child of God. The sweet promise of the Shepherd Psalm says, "Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life."

Romans 8:28 is a conditional promise - ". . . to them that love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose." The conditions are – loving God and living for His purpose. These are the birthmarks of the Christian and our claim to our Saviour's sovereign and holy love.

Trust God today. Do not despair. He is with you and is unfolding His mighty and loving plan. With joy you can claim all His promises and boldly face your day with all its challenges.

The old hymn says, "The flame shall not burn thee; I only design: thy dross to consume and thy gold to refine." Isaiah 41:10

Lay your head on the pillow of God's sovereignty and grace. He is in charge of your life. Trust in Him Who is your Saviour and Lord and Who said, "Come unto Me all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28

"In the center of the circle

Of the will of God I stand.

There can be no second causes

All must come from His dear hand.

All is well, for 'tis my Father

Who my life has planned."

“Holy Father, still our troubled hearts with the comfort of your sovereignty. Thank you for planning out our lives for our good. Help us to walk by faith today and to rejoice!”
